What is PRTG and How Does It Work?
PRTG stands for Paessler Router Traffic Grapher, a network monitoring tool developed by Paessler AG in Germany. The first version was released in 2003, and since then it has been used to monitor networks of different sizes. It covers LAN, WAN, WLAN and VPN, and can monitor websites, mail servers, file servers, and other network devices. Although the core is designed for Windows, it can monitor Linux servers as well.
PRTG runs on Windows machines and allows collecting statistics from routers, switches, servers and other hardware. It provides a centralized monitoring platform where every device with a unique IP address can be observed. The architecture includes a central server, probes, and sensors that gather and manage data. Probes collect data from the network surface, and sensors render and present it. There are many sensors available, designed for different platforms with scripts.
