Masts come in two main types: guyed masts, which rely on guy wires anchored to the ground for lateral stability, and self-supporting masts, which stand independently on a solid foundation. While guyed masts are commonly used where extended coverage is required through a cable-supported framework, self-supporting masts use a lattice structure with a strong foundation to resist lateral loads from wind and earthquakes.

A self-supporting mast is a recognizable example of a lattice structure that stands on its own without external cables. In contrast, many tall guyed towers employ a system of steel guy wires attached to the ground to maintain equilibrium of the structure.

Installation of guyed masts typically includes an earth grounding system to safely discharge unwanted electrical currents. Ties and supports are placed at specific intervals around the lattice to maintain balance. Geotechnical studies and soil testing are mandatory before installation to ensure proper grounding performance.

Self-supporting masts require robust concrete foundations and a solid cross-section design so they can withstand lateral loads without external cables. Lightning protection is a technical necessity for these masts, and integrating it with grounding enhances safety for equipment mounted on the mast.

In terms of design, guy wires provide vertical and lateral stability by surrounding the mast with steel cables that brace the structure. Self-supporting masts use bolted and welded steel members in a lattice format, enabling multiple antennas to be mounted on the same structure. Together, both mast types deliver different capabilities for telecommunications coverage.
