Introduction to SIM Card Modems and Their Types

If you lack a fixed line or wired internet is not feasible, SIM-card modems offer a viable alternative. These devices house a SIM card to provide internet access. TD-LTE SIMs typically offer higher bandwidth and faster speeds than other modems.

TD-LTE fixed or desktop SIM-card modem

TD-LTE SIM-card modems are suitable for internet connectivity in organizations, offices, and apartments. Their bandwidth is typically higher and they often provide higher speeds than other modems.

Speed and capacity

These modems support more simultaneous connections. TD-LTE speeds range from 1 to 80 Mbps, depending on location and antenna signal.

TD-LTE SIM card features

The SIM card is used for TD-LTE internet and is not suitable for phone calls or SMS on a handset. If you buy a TD-LTE modem from an operator's official store, it may only support that operator's TDD SIM.

Therefore, before purchasing SIM-card modems, ensure the operator's network coverage at your home or workplace. Otherwise, the purchase may be ineffective.

3G, 4G, 4.5G modems

These modems are easy to use and do not require a landline. They come in fixed and portable forms as follows:

Fixed internet modem

A fixed modem activated by USIM or data SIM is not intended for outdoor use. Note the SIM-card size compatibility; some modems accept only standard SIMs, so adapters may be necessary for smaller SIMs.

Portable internet modem (MiFi)

The portable MiFi device provides internet access on the go and is small enough to fit in a pocket or bag. Useful for travel, cafes, universities, and situations where fixed internet is unavailable. However, mobile data plans tend to be pricier and limit data volume.

USB dongle or USB modem

USB dongles are compact devices that accept a SIM card and connect to a laptop via USB, drawing power from the laptop. They typically do not provide Wi-Fi and connect to a single device.

Rechargeable car internet modem

For travel with your own vehicle and uninterrupted internet, a rechargeable SIM-card modem is a good choice. These modems can be connected to the car's cigarette lighter and provide internet without running out of power.

Power-bank powered modem

Power-bank SIM-card modems resemble power banks and can charge devices while providing internet. Some models include an SD card slot for sharing files. These modems vary in battery capacity and with a 5000 mAh battery can last one to two days in typical use.
