Types of fiber optic connectors and their characteristics

Before examining the connectors in detail, it is useful to understand the three main parts of a connector: the ferrule, the connector body, and the coupling device. The ferrule provides alignment and holds the optical fiber in place; the connector body holds the ferrule and connects it to the coating and other components; the coupling device keeps the connector attached to equipment such as transceiver modules to ensure data exchange operates optimally.

Fiber optic connectors have a significant impact on transmission performance, and a good connector can greatly reduce reflection loss and misalignment. There are many types of fiber optic connectors, each with its own advantages and disadvantages and suitable for different network supports.

SC connector

Developed in the mid-1980s by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Laboratories, this is one of the first square ferrule connectors. The ferrule is 2.5 mm, with a push-pull locking mechanism. Pins are mostly PC or APC, and the ceramic ferrule enables precise alignment. It is low-cost, has high mechanical strength and low insertion loss.

LC connector

A modern version of SC, waterproof and high-density friendly. Available in simplex and duplex forms, with a 1.25 mm ferrule made of zirconia and a locking mechanism.

FC connector

Also produced by NTT; metal housing and screw-type locking; 2.5 mm ferrule. Simple structure suitable for precise measurement equipment like OTDR.

ST connector

Introduced after FC; ferrule 2.5 mm; ferrules are mostly ceramic; housing is nickel-plated metal with a push/turn locking mechanism.

MPO/MTP connector

Designed for ribbon fiber; supports 8–24 fibers; widely used in data centers; available in single-mode and multi-mode; attenuation is higher than ceramic ferrule connectors.

MT-RJ connector

Duplex connector used with SM or MM fiber; has male and female versions; typical return loss is about 0.25 dB for SM and 0.35 dB for MM.

MU connector

Miniature SC with a 1.25 mm ferrule; compact design.

DIN connector

Named after Deutsches Institut fur Normung; circular with a 2.5 mm ceramic ferrule and threaded locking; used in SM and MM in MIDI and other equipment.

E2000 connector

Locking with a protective shutter to guard against dust; 2.5 mm ceramic ferrule; used in SM APC/PC and MM PC variants.

SMA connector

One of the first fiber optic connectors; steel ferrule with a 4.22 mm diameter; metal housing with screw-locking; used with multi-mode and in medical applications, though with higher loss.
