Server RAM: Understanding types and applications
RAM is the short‑term memory of a computer that stores active data. Server RAM follows the same principles but is designed for network infrastructure and services, requiring higher reliability. The discussion below covers key differences, buffering categories, and speed-based types.
Two main categories of server RAM
Server RAM is generally divided into:
- Buffered (registered) RAM
- Unbuffered RAM
Buffered RAM types
- Registered RAM (RDIMM)
- Fully Buffered RAM (FB-DIMM)
- Load-Reduced RAM (LRDIMM)
Server RAM by speed
DDR2
This generation was introduced in 2003 with a maximum transfer speed of about 3200 MB/s. Over time it increased to around 8000 MB/s and was commonly used in older systems; the most common version is PC2-5300.
DDR3
DDR3 was released in 2007; initial speeds were around 6400 MB/s and later reached about 14900 MB/s.
DDR4
DDR4 was released in 2014, with speeds ranging from about 17000 to 19200 MB/s.
DDR5
DDR5 is the latest memory generation for servers, nearly twice as fast as DDR4. It offers better energy efficiency, higher stability, and lower error rates, making it a strong choice for server RAM to achieve optimal performance.
