Overview of Network Attacks and Mitigation Techniques
This article surveys common network attacks and discusses countermeasures. While networks are built to be secure, threats persist; understanding attacks and adopting defensive measures helps maintain reliable operation. The discussion covers several attack types and practical preventive and reactive measures, applicable to general networks including VoIP infrastructures.
Types of Network Attacks
DOS Attacks
Denial of Service attacks occur when an attacker floods a target with excessive traffic, making the service unavailable to legitimate users. Defensive measures include resilient design, traffic filtering, rate limiting, and thorough monitoring.
Session Hijacking
Session hijacking refers to gaining unauthorized access to an active session between a client and server. An attacker may capture or impersonate the session to obtain sensitive data.
Port Scanning
Port scanning identifies open ports that could be entry points for attackers. Preventive steps include disabling unnecessary ports, tightening firewall rules, and ongoing network hardening.
Man in the Middle
In a man in the middle attack, the attacker positions themselves between two communicating parties and can eavesdrop or alter the exchanged data. Users often remain unaware of the interception.
Smurfing
Smurfing, also known as a ping flood, uses ICMP echo requests directed at broadcast addresses to overwhelm a network with traffic. A UDP variant known as Fraggle achieves a similar effect.
SYN Flood
In a SYN flood the attacker sends a flood of SYN packets and does not complete the three-way handshake, leaving connections half-open and exhausting resources, leading to service disruption.
Security Measures to Counter Attacks
- Use antivirus software to detect and remove malware such as worms and viruses.
- Deploy firewalls to create a barrier between internal networks and external networks; proper configuration is essential to prevent unauthorized access.
- Regular data backups help mitigate data loss caused by attacks and system failures.
