Active Network Equipment
This article introduces active network equipment and reviews several items that require power to operate and are responsible for establishing, maintaining, storing, managing, and transmitting information within the network.
Network Interface Card
A Network Interface Card (NIC) is among the core hardware components of a computer network. Every computer needs a NIC to connect to the network medium. NICs enable the connection between the computer and the transmission medium and support speeds of 10, 100, and 1000 Mbps. Most modern motherboards include an onboard NIC; older systems may require a separate card. NICs are available in wired and wireless forms and have their own characteristics.
Server
When we talk about active network equipment, a server is a central component. It provides services to other computers or users and its cost is relatively high. Choosing a good server can significantly improve network performance and maintenance, while low-quality servers can cause slowdowns or failures. A server is a computer that runs server software and responds to client requests after processing them.
Access Point
An Access Point (AP) enables wireless devices to connect to the network. In wired networks, a switch provides connectivity; in wireless networks, an AP performs a similar function for wireless connections.
Switch
A switch is a crucial component that allows multiple devices to exchange data over the network. It ensures traffic between nodes is efficient and allows peers to communicate directly. Network devices connected via a switch are often referred to as LAN switches.
Router
A Router connects networks and determines the best paths for data transmission. In large networks, routers help segment IP networks and enable inter-network communication.
Modem
A modem is the device that enables users to connect to the internet. Modems come in different types and serve as the bridge between the local network and the internet.
Print Server
A print server is optional but can be used to share printers on the network. It connects the printer to the network, allowing users to send print requests without leaving a computer on to share the printer.
