What is fiber optic cable?

Fiber optic cables are composed of thin, transparent strands typically made of glass or plastic. They transmit light from one end to the other, carrying signals through the strands as light.

Impact on the network

Fiber optic cables are network cables containing a large number of glass strands housed in an insulated jacket. The main advantage is very high bandwidth, capable of supporting roughly 10 Gbps. This speed greatly enhances the performance of networks and servers that use fiber, and it is more popular than older copper cables. Another important aspect is the transmission range of these cables.

Compared with copper, fiber optics offer lower attenuation and better immunity to electromagnetic interference, enabling longer-distance network links and improved flexibility in network design.

Fiber types and design notes

Two broad categories exist: single-mode and multimode fiber. These cables are designed to use a single fiber for each signal. The core diameter of these cables is typically very small, around 9 micrometers for single-mode fibers. Multimode cables are often used in computer networks and can carry multiple signals along a single fiber.

Summary

Fiber optic cables provide high bandwidth, long reach, and great flexibility, making them well suited for network infrastructures and services such as VoIP. By adopting this technology, network providers and administrators can improve performance and scalability.
