Overview of Computer Network Types

Local Area Network (LAN)

A Local Area Network connects computers within a building or a small area. It uses standard cabling and provides fast data transfer, easy maintenance, and reasonable security, with a scope limited to the local environment.

Personal Area Network (PAN)

A Personal Area Network is designed for personal devices within a short range, typically up to about 10 meters, used to connect devices such as laptops, smartphones, and media players.

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

A Metropolitan Area Network connects multiple LANs across a city or region to form a larger network. It is commonly used by government bodies and enterprises for city-wide connectivity.

Wide Area Network (WAN)

A Wide Area Network covers broad geographic areas, enabling interconnection of multiple networks across cities, regions or countries. The Internet is one of the largest WANs and relies on fiber, copper, and satellite links.

System Area Network (SAN)

A System Area Network focuses on high-speed interconnection between servers and storage or other high-performance resources within data centers to support low latency and high throughput workloads.

Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)

A Wireless Local Area Network uses wireless technology to connect devices within a localized area, reducing the need for cabling. WLANs are common in offices, schools, and homes to provide flexible connectivity.
