Data transmission methods in networks
Understanding data transmission methods in a network helps build a clearer picture of how networks operate. When setting up a network for an organization, it is important to decide which transmission method is suitable and cost-effective. This article introduces common data transmission methods and reviews their advantages, limitations, and use cases.
Coaxial transmission method
Coaxial cables are commonly used for local area networks. Coaxial cables have a copper core through which data can be transmitted up to about 200 meters. This cable type enables data transmission along the copper center.
Twisted Pair transmission
These cables come in various categories from CAT1 to CAT8, with CAT5e and CAT6a being common. They typically cover short to medium distances and provide speeds from 56 kbps up to several gigabits. In Iran CAT8 is not available, and CAT1, CAT2, CAT4 and CAT5 are largely obsolete. CAT5e supports speeds starting around 100 Mbps, and CAT6a up to 1 Gbps with bandwidth up to 250 MHz.
ISDN
ISDN is used for transmitting video data. While it mainly handles video data, it can carry other data as well. Its data rate is 128 kbps and it supports distances around 20–30 kilometers. Although other cables exist, ISDN usage has declined, but it remains in use for certain network services and hardware.
X25 in data transmission
This method is suitable for long-distance data transmission such as fax. It supports distances around 20–30 kilometers and speeds around 5.1 Mbps.
Fiber optic transmission
Fiber optic cables transmit data using light. They offer advantages such as resistance to noise and higher speeds, compared with copper cables. Benefits include:
- Resistance to noise and suitability for computer network support
- Very high data transfer speeds
- Cost can be high, but is cost-effective for appropriate use
- Fiber is not flammable
- No intrinsic distance limit; supports long distances; however, per kilometer a light repeater is required
Table comparing data transmission methods
| Data transmission method | Transfer speed | Supported distance | Cost | Applications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coaxial cable | 10 Mbps to 1 Gbps | Short to medium | Low | Cable TV – LAN |
| Twisted Pair | 100 Mbps to 10 Gbps | Short to medium | Low to medium | LAN |
| Fiber optic | 1 Gbps to 100 Gbps | Long | High | High-speed connections – international Internet |
| ISDN | 64 Kbps to 128 Kbps | Medium to long | Medium | Phone calls – video conferencing – home Internet |
| X25 | Up to 64 Kbps | Long | High | Bank networks – data transmission for fax |
What is the difference between coaxial and fiber optic cables? Coaxial is suitable for short distances with lower speeds, while fiber is suited for longer distances and higher speeds.
What are Twisted Pair cables used for? They are typically used in local area networks (LAN) to connect devices in office or home environments.
What are the advantages of using fiber in networks? Fiber offers higher bandwidth and faster data transfer speeds and is suitable for long distances. It also has greater resistance to electromagnetic interference than copper cables.
