Fiber Optic Single-Mode and Multimode: Differences and Applications

Fiber optic cables come in two main types: single-mode (SMF) and multimode (MMF). Each type is designed for specific use cases, and choosing between them depends on the distance, required bandwidth, and project budget.

Structural characteristics

The single-mode fiber has a very narrow core that guides light in a single ray. The core diameter is typically around 8 to 10 micrometers. The overall cable diameter (cladding and jacket) is about 125 micrometers. In contrast, multimode fiber has a larger core, approximately 50 to 62.5 micrometers in diameter, designed to support multiple light paths. The outer diameter is about 125 micrometers as well. Due to the larger core, light travels via multiple modes in MMF, offering higher bandwidth but typically limiting the distance.

Light sources and equipment

Single-mode systems usually use laser-based light sources, while multimode systems often use LEDs (or lower-powered lasers) suitable for short to medium-range links, making MMF commonly used in LANs, campuses and data centers.

Applications and key differences

  • Core diameter: SMF ≈ 8–10 μm; MMF ≈ 50–62.5 μm.
  • Bandwidth and distance: SMF supports higher bandwidth over long distances; MMF is suitable for shorter to medium distances with lower cost.
  • Cost and equipment: SMF tends to be more expensive and uses laser-based sources; MMF is cheaper and more commonly uses LED or lower-power lasers.
  • Repeaters and maintenance: For long distances SMF requires repeaters or signal amplification equipment; MMF also requires amplification for long links but is usually used in shorter projects.

Conclusion

Choosing between single-mode and multimode depends on project needs: long distances with high bandwidth favor SMF, while MMF suits shorter ranges with lower cost.
